Melody loved blowing her horn. But this was not always so. When she was little, she had trouble just lifting the heavy brass instrument. Nevertheless, even then she knew she was destined to be one of the great horn blowers of all time and persisted toward her goal.

Now regarded as an accomplished player, Melody reflected on this cherished memory as she prepared herself for the most difficult challenge of her career—The World Horn Blowing Tournament. Melody felt sure she was the best and would easily walk away with the Grand Prize! After all, who practised as hard as she? And who else had as much talent? All of her (admittedly not very talented) friends assured her of victory, at least in their home state.
When the first day of the tournament arrived, Melody stepped onto the stage wearing her finest taffeta gown and looked across the stage at all the other girls in the competition and felt butterflies in her tummy—they looked just like her. Did they feel the same?

For her first performance she was a little shaky, but played well enough, and was advanced to the second round, in which she further demonstrated her skill to the judges. In round three there were fewer opponents to contend with and she dispatched them with little trouble.

The final round was next. Twelve contestants to beat. Melody strode onto the stage with impressive confidance. She had picked a difficult song just for this moment and had rehearsed it hundreds of times. As she blew her horn, Melody was in awe at how well she was playing! She could do no wrong. She could feel the eyes of the enraptured judges upon her. No doubt each one was scribing a “10” on the cards before them. When Melody finished the applause was deafening!

But when the name of this year’s Horn Blower Champion was announced—it wasn’t her! At first she assumed she didn’t hear correctly, and started for the podium, but the supposed winner was already there. She turned and ran behind a curtain.

When everyone except the old man sweeping the floor had left the auditorium, Melody stepped out from behind the curtain. Her tear stained dress not quite so elegant now, and her beautiful wings heavy with the despair she felt, she dreaded the long flight home.

Stepping down from the stage, dim now with the bright lights turned low, the old man shuffled towards her. He coughed and said “Your gifts are many, yet you have no humility. Listen to the winning angel who plays from her heart and hopes other will enjoy her sweet song as much as she did playing it for them.”

Angry at first, Melody dismissed the old man’s wisdom, but as she flew through the night his words took hold of her thoughts. She remembered the first song she played right through, how her parents beamed at her and how good it felt just to play. She was feeling lighter already.
